The data layer

What we track, in numbers.

Shelfbee's wedge is the canonical product layer — a normalized graph that lets you compare a 2L bag of milk at No Frills against the same canonical product at Loblaws, Superstore, Independent, Fortinos, Zehrs, Foodland, Metro, Sobeys, FreshCo, Walmart, T&T, Iqbal Halal, Foody Mart, and 56 other GTA retailers — in one search, in two seconds.

What makes this different

Most Canadian grocery price comparison sites cover 10-15 chains. Shelfbee covers 71. The extra 37 are the halal, South Asian, East Asian, Caribbean, Italian, Polish, Middle Eastern, and health- specialty grocers that actually serve the GTA's demographic mix. Nielsen and Numerator (the incumbent paid-data vendors) don't index most of these.

The canonical product layer is the defensible asset. A canonical is one row that aggregates store SKUs from every retailer carrying the same product — different brands, different pack sizes, different merchandising names, all reconciled to one record. Today we have 824 canonical products with 4,161 store SKUs attached (12% of the 35,606 we've ingested). The remaining backlog is the matcher-throughput sprint in our roadmap.

Cross-banner pricing for the Loblaws platform. We can show the same canonical product priced across all 8 Loblaws Companies banners (No Frills, Loblaws, Superstore, Independent, Fortinos, Zehrs, Wholesale Club, Valu-Mart) for any given week. The spread is real — Ambrosia Apples went from $1.45 at Fortinos to $10.50 at Loblaws this past week on the same canonical. That kind of normalized cross- banner view is what Loblaws Inc.'s competitive-intel teams pay six figures for from Nielsen / Numerator / Circana annually. We have it weekly.
